What is Acupuncture? Traditional Versus Scientific Explanation
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine, single use needles at strategic points on the body. This technique is a key component of Chinese medicine. The traditional viewpoint explains acupuncture as a technique for manipulating the flow of energy (Qi), blood and fluids throughout the body to restore balance and harmony, to remove blockages and affect positive change on various systems of the body, mind and spirit.
In contrast, the western research explains that acupuncture can stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue. Acupuncture can be used to effect blood flow, inflammatory mechanism and modulate pain pathways.
I use both systems of explanation to guide my practice and style of acupuncture to ensure safe and effective practice. Applying western medical knowledge to the traditional acupuncture system amplifies the powerful effects of acupuncture and deepens the understanding if its mechanisms.
Acupuncture Safety
Acupuncture is generally considered to be safe but occasionally (as with all health treatments) may be associated with possible adverse reactions in individual cases. These will be explained to you during your consult.
What is Electroacupuncture?
Electroacupuncture involves the application of a mild electrical current to acupuncture needles after they are inserted into the body. It is an application of electro therapy used to amplify the effect of acupuncture. I follow a style of electroacupuncture called Neuropuncture, which is a complete neuroscience evidence based system of acupuncture. Electro-acupuncture is applied for 20 minutes while you relax lying down. During your consult we can discuss whether manual acupuncture or electroacupuncture is best suited for you
